Situated at the northern edge of the tropical Indo-Pacific and on the southern coastline of China, the waters of Hong Kong's mainland and over 230 island shorelines support a rich variety of hard and soft coral communities. The hard coral communities fringe the shallow subtidal zone of numerous sheltered shorelines predominately in the eastern and north-eastern regions Hong Kong. The coral communities of Hong Kong are a valuable natural marine resource of high biodiversity supporting associated invertebrate life and play an important role as nursery grounds and shelter for fish stocks. |
