Hong Kong is a small territory at the edge of the northern tropical zone. The local landscape is dominated by hills and ravines. Flat land is restricted to the low floodplains and coastal regions. In this hilly domain, we can find hundreds of small rocky streams that flow through steep ravines. These hill streams are typically fast flowing at their upland sources, and gradually reduce speedas they wind along hill cuttings to reach the lowlands. Unlike streams that are common in all districts, Hong Kong's riversare very limited in number. The few long and meandering rivers are found only in the floodplains of the northern New Territories.
